Stress is an inherent and valuable part of living the life you want. Stress signals that you care about what you’re working on, which can lead to a sense of accomplishment. Interpreting stress as a challenge, rather than a threat, allows you to perform at your peak. As lawyers, your work is intellectually challenging, involves high stakes and clashes in your clients’ values, and is performed within an adversarial context with a skilled advocate on the other side. And, you face the common challenges of balancing work, families, communities, and maybe even some time for yourself. When lawyers fail to develop and utilize good habits to manage work/life stress, burnout can result. Resilience skills are ways of thinking, feeling, acting, and relating to others that enable you to more effectively withstand the day-to-day stressors and challenges you face and prevent burnout. Effective resilience practices also promote meaning and autonomy which are often key areas of need in the lives of lawyers. In this webinar, Paula and Dave will explain what burnout is, along with its causes, warning signs, and gender differences and outline proactive strategies for building your stress resilience over the course of your career.
