Video: Legal Technology and Innovation: A Framework and Skills for Success

October 16, 2017 By Legal Career Central

Note: This is not a CLE program.

Many lawyers hear “innovation” and “legal technology” and fear that artificial intelligence will replace lawyers. Don’t be afraid, embrace the many opportunities! By leveraging both innovation and technology, lawyers can not only become more efficient but also improve legal-service delivery quality and obtain better outcomes for their clients. Savvy clients expect their attorneys to innovate, use technology effectively, and work closely with them to continuously improve the value provided through their services. Don’t get lost in the “robot lawyer” hype! Innovation is about more than shiny new technology. Focus on building the skills your future clients will demand.

Professor Daniel W. Linna Jr. will provide a brief overview of the evolving legal industry and the new skills lawyers need to excel. He will briefly discuss process improvement, project management, data-driven decision making, expert systems, and artificial intelligence. He will discuss these disciplines within a “people, process, & technology” framework for solving specific problems and improving legal services. He will also discuss a framework for innovation and development in this rapidly changing world.

Dan is the Director of LegalRnD – The Center for Legal Services Innovation and a Professor of Law in Residence at Michigan State University College of Law. Dan is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. Previously, Dan was an equity partner in the litigation department at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn.
